Pre-Doctoral Career Diversity Summer Workshops

The Humanities Without Walls Pre-Doctoral program aims to help prepare doctoral students for careers both within and outside the academy through a series of summer workshops. Graduate students selected for this program will engage in intensive discussions with organizers of public humanities projects, leaders of university presses and learned societies, experts in the various domains of the digital humanities, representatives of governmental and non-governmental organizations, and holders of important non-faculty positions in colleges and universities (academic administrators, student services professionals, librarians and archivists, development officers, and so forth). Through a series of workshops, talks, and field trips, participants learn how to leverage their skills and training towards careers in the private sector, the non-profit world, arts administration, public media and many other fields.

History graduate student, Aaron Aruck, participated in the first Humanities Without Walls graduate student workshop and has translated his experience into a range of successful grant applications and fellowship opportunities. Aruck affirms the value of the workshop for introducing grad students to a range of possible career trajectories as well as building community among graduate students at different institutions. He explains, “HWW was instrumental in expanding my thinking about the diversity of careers possible for people with humanistic PhD training. HWW also fostered a really open, honest, and healing conversation between PhD students who often have little space to explore or think about career and life possibilities outside of the traditional academic profession.”
