Click here for more information. \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n\n  \n  \nAbout the Speakers:\nWalter Murch\nMurch has been a Hollywood sound editor for over 45 years\, and has worked with such names as Francis Ford Coppola and George Lucas. He has won three Academy Awards—one for his work on Apocalypse Now (Best Sound) and two for The English Patient (Best Sound and Best Film Editing). \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nLawrence (Ren) Weschler\nA graduate of Cowell College (1974)\, Weschler was a staff writer for over twenty years (1981–2002) at The New Yorker\, where his work shuttled between political tragedies and cultural comedies. He is a two-time winner of the George Polk Award (for Cultural Reporting in 1988 and Magazine Reporting in 1992) and was also a recipient of Lannan Literary Award (1998). \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nEnrico Ramirez-Ruiz\nRamirez-Ruiz is a professor of Astronomy and Astrophysics at UC Santa Cruz with a Ph.D. from the University of Cambridge. His research focuses on the violent universe with an emphasis on stellar explosions\, gamma-ray bursts and accretion phenomena. Ramirez-Ruiz is one of the seven international scholars selected this year for the Niels Bohr Professorship Program\, which aims to attract top international researchers to Danish Universities. He leads the international research collaboration in theoretical astrophysics and splits his time between UC Santa Cruz and the University of Copenhagen. \n  \n  \n

DESCRIPTION:Angela Elsy is a lecturer specialized in La Francophonie\, the countries and regions around the world where French is spoken. For ten years she served as director of La Maison Francophone\, an academic/residential program at Cowell College. She is in her third year and final year as Licker Chair at Cowell. She will present a public lecture in English on her research in Morocco\, Senegal and Cameroun in 2013 and 2014 and the course she taught based on this work.

SUMMARY:Music of The Waves: A Conversation with Lawrence Weschler and William Finnegan Moderated by Harry Berger Jr.
DESCRIPTION:Lawrence Weschler and William Finnegan both graduated from Cowell College\, UCSC\, in 1974. Both worked at The New Yorker\, where Finnegan still works. Both studied here at UCSC with Harry Berger. And all three – Weschler\, Finnegan\, and Berger – are public intellectuals known for their humor and incisiveness and also for the zany connections they like to make. \nIn this symposium the three literary giants reflect on writing\, music\, time\, and surfing. Weschler focuses on the temporality of both writing and music. The writer and the musician structure time much as the architect\, the painter\, and the sculptor structure spaces. Finnegan sees timing as crucial to his writing and to his passion for surfing\, where the consequences of poor timing can be much more disastrous than in writing.
