Her principal book publications are Language and Reason: A Study of Haberma’s Pragmatics (MIT Press\, 1994) and Re-Presenting the Good Society (MIT Press\, 2006). She is editor and translator of Habermas: On the Pragmatics of Communication (MIT Press\, 1998) and has published numerous articles in scholarly journals and books\, mainly in the areas of social and political philosophy.

DESCRIPTION:The Puzzle of Transparency\nAs you and I are out for a walk\, I notice that the sky is getting cloudier and so I ask you “do you believe that it’s going to rain?” In response to this question\, you normally do not pay attention to your own states of mind\, but rather to the way the sky looks and the air feels. But if I’m asking about what you believe\, then shouldn’t you pay attention to your own state of mind\, instead of to your perceptible environment? Some philosophers claim that\, when I utter the interrogative sentence “do you believe that it’s going to rain?”\, I’m not curious about your state of mind\, but only about the weather. But this is false: I could ask you the very same question even if I happen to know perfectly well that it’s going to rain\, and I’m just curious what you make of the current weather conditions. So\, if I’m asking about your beliefs\, why do you normally answer me by paying attention to the weather instead of paying attention to your state of mind? In order to answer this question\, I argue\, we will have to admit that the capacity to represent one’s own mental states can make a metaphysical difference to the nature of those states. \n  \nRam Neta is a Professor of Philosophy at The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He specializes in epistemology and is currently at work on a book on the nature of knowledge. SUMMARY:Center for Public Philosophy: High School Ethics Bowl
DESCRIPTION:What is an Ethics Bowl? \nThe Ethics Bowl is a collaborative yet competitive event\, more nuanced than debate\, in which teams are presented with a series of wide-ranging ethical dilemmas and are asked to analyze them; they are then judged on the basis of their analyses. An exciting tournament\, it is also a way for students to gain valuable insight into ethical and philosophical issues. According to Michael Steinmann\, director of the Stevens Institute High School Ethics Bowl\, the events promote intellectual\, personal\, and social growth. They deepen students’ understanding of the complexity of ethical issues; increase their sense of personal responsibility; and promote a model of rational\, civil discourse so essential to functioning democracies. \nDuring each round\, a moderator poses a question to two teams composed of five students and the competition follows a predetermined format encompassing team order and time limitations. All teams receive the cases and questions in fall so that they can prepare their responses with their coaches. The panel of judges includes not only those with philosophy backgrounds but businesspeople\, politicians\, and members of various professions in the community to underscore the fact that ethics is not simply an academic subject. We will also invite the press to attend. Each team will have the opportunity to compete in several rounds to advance to the semifinals and then the championship round. DESCRIPTION:“Many Molyneux Questions”\nMohan Matthen and Jonathan Cohen \nMolyneux asked whether a newly sighted man would recognize and distinguish a sphere and a cube by sight alone\, assuming that he could previously do this by touch. The most historically important responses to Molyneux arise from views that apply uniformly to questions about the transferability of representations of (not just shape\, but) any arbitrary feature shared by any two modalities. Our starting point is that this is over-simple. The scientific literature contains investigations of many such questions; some are answered positively\, others negatively. The answer to each question is empirical and each has to be investigated separately. Given this fragmentation\, we suggest that the most fruitful approach to MQ is “dimensional:” we identify and organize the problem around parameters that pose processing difficulties for various modalities\, and ask how these difficulties affect MQ. This approach yields many novel MQs\, some new\, others re-applications of problems posed in other contexts. \nJonathan Cohen is a Professor of Philosophy at UC San Diego. SUMMARY:Maudemarie Clark "Nietzsche's Nihilism"
DESCRIPTION:Nietzsche claims that in realating the “advent of nihilism\,” he is relating “the history of the next two centuries.” He also claims that he himself has been a nihilist\, but that he had now left it behind\, “outside of [him]self.” In this paper\, I offer an account of how Nietzsche understands nihilism and of how to understand his own (early and middle-period) work as nihilistic. I argue (against Bernard Reginster) that the nihilism of interest to Nietzsche is not\, or at least not mainly\, a philosophical position\, but a cultural condition. The upshot of my account is two-fold: first\, that it was only in overcoming the naturalistic orientation that it has become standard to attribute to him (and that I once attributed to him) that Nietzsche left nihilism behind\, and\, second\, that our current cultural and political situation is well on its way to the kind of nihilism that Nietzsce was particularly concerned with. \nAbout:\nMaudemarie Clark is a Professor of Philosophy at UC Riverside. SUMMARY:Audun Dahl: The Empirical Reality of Moral Reasoning
DESCRIPTION:Many theories have viewed reason and reasoning as essential to making moral judgments. In contrast\, recent psychological proposals have contested the centrality of reasoning\, arguing that most or many moral judgments are based on automatic\, emotional reactions (sometimes termed “institutions\,” e.g. Greene\, 2013; Haidt 2013). These proposals are based on experiments taken to show that people are sometimes unable to justify their moral evaluations and that such evaluations are sensitive to factors presumed morally irrelevant. In this talk\, I will argue that these studies have a number of methodological and theoretical limitations. Research without these limitations\, for instance on responses to so-called trolley dilemmas\, indicates that reasoning plays important roles when individuals make moral judgments. Furthermore\, this research suggests a realistic view of moral reasoning that is not premised on the dichotomy between reasoning and emotional reactions. \nAbout:\nAudun Dahl is an Assistant Professor of Psychology at UC Santa Cruz. His research investigates early moral development. One line of work deals with the emergence of infant helping behavior and a second line deals with how young children acquire an aversion to harming others. His research combines naturalistic and experimental methods to study how infants’ everyday social interactions contribute to these developments.

SUMMARY:Susanna Schellenberg "Perceptual Consciousness as a Mental Activity"
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: \nI argue that perceptual consciousness is constituted by a mental activity. The mental activity in question is the activity of employing perceptual capacities\, such as discriminatory\, selective capacities. This is a radical view\, but I hope to make it plausible. In arguing for this mental activist view\, I reject orthodox views on which perceptual consciousness is analyzed in terms of (sensory awareness relations to) peculiar entities\, such as\, phenomenal properties\, external mind-independent properties\, propositions\, sense-data\, qualia\, or intentional objects. \nAbout:\nSusanna Schellenberg is a Professor of Philosophy at Rutgers University and an Executive Council Faculty Member of the Rutgers University Center for Cognitive Science. Her work focuses on a range of topics in epistemology\, philosophy of mind\, and philosophy of language. She is particularly interested in the nature of perceptual content\, the epistemic role of perceptual experience\, and mental capacities.

SUMMARY:David Landy: "Explanation and Personal Identity in the Appendix to Hume's Treatise"
DESCRIPTION:In the Appendix to his Treatise\, Hume famously expresses a deep dissatisfaction with the account of personal identity that he had earlier presented\, but offers only the briefest description of what his concern is. Scholars working on this problem have presented a wide variety of suggestions of what Hume might be thinking. I will argue that such scholars have largely overlooked an important clue: the fact that Hume twice presents the problem as one with any theory that purports\, “to explain the principles\, that unite our successive perceptions in our thought or consciousness.” The key here\, I will suggest\, lies in understanding Hume’s notion of explanation. The two most prominent accounts of Hume on explanation lie at the extreme ends of an interpretive spectrum\, and are both philosophically and exegetically untenable. The first is that scientific explanation aims at nothing more than subsuming particular observations under inductively-established universal generalizations. The second is that Hume makes explanatory appeals to certain substances and causal powers that we cannot in any way represent\, but to which we can nonetheless refer. The first gets right Hume’s insistence on the connection of explanation to experience. The second gets right that it is the universal regularities of experience that stand in need of explanation\, not that do the explaining. So\, I will present a new account of Hume’s understanding of explanation that takes these successes and failures into account\, and will show that this interpretation perfectly predicts everything that Hume finds wrong with his account of personal identity. \nDavid Landy is an Associate Professor in the Department of Philosophy at San Francisco State University. He works primariy on the history of Modern philosophy\, especially Hume and Kant\, and also has interests in German Idealism and the work of Wilfrid Sellars.

He has taught at Harvard\, MIT\, and UC Santa Cruz\, where he founded the first organic garden on a university with Alan Chadwick in 1967. \nIn 1976 alongside Paige Smith\, he began the California Conservation Corps under Jerry Brown’s administration. Dr. Lee organized and proposed the Greenbelt Initiative to save the Pogonip in 1978. SUMMARY:Walter Sinnott-Armstrong "Implicit Moral Attitudes"
DESCRIPTION:Most moral philosophers and psychologists focus on explicit moral beliefs that people give as answers to questions. However\, much research in social psychology shows that implicit moral attitudes (unconscious beliefs or associations) also affect our thinking and behavior. This talk will report our new psychological and neuroscientific research on implicit moral attitudes (using a process dissociation procedure) and then explore potential implications for scientific moral psychology as well as for philosophical theories of moral epistemology\, responsibility\, and virtue. If there is time\, I will discuss practical uses of these findings in criminal law\, especially regarding the treatment of psychopaths and prediction of their recidivism. \nWalter Sinnott-Armstrong is Chauncey Stillman Professor of Practical Ethics in the Department of Philosophy and the Kenan Institute for Ethics at Duke University. He has published widely on ethics (theoretical and applied as well as meta-ethics)\, empirical moral psychology and neuroscience\, philosophy of law\, epistemology\, philosophy of religion\, and informal logic. His current work is on moral psychology and brain science as well as uses of neuroscience in legal systems.

SUMMARY:Gayle Salamon: "Gender Essentialism and Eidetic Inquiry"
DESCRIPTION:This talk revisits the essentialism debates within feminism\, and reconsiders the impasse in which those debates landed. What understanding of “essence” was operative in those conversations about gender essentialism? And might there be a different way of thinking about the relation between essence and gender? I turn to singular and plural essences in Merleau-Ponty and Husserl’s concept of eidetic variation\, showing that that phenomenology offers an articulation of essence in which variation and temporal unfolding\, rather than fixity and atemporality\, are primary. The phenomenological concept of essence\, I will argue\, offers a way to reconsider essentialism that steers clear of the straits of bilogical determinism and social constructionism that have deadlocked previous conversations about gender and essence. \nAbout:\nGayle Salamon is an Associate Professor of English and Gender and Sexuality Studies at Princeton University. SUMMARY:Noa Latham: Meditation and Self-Control
DESCRIPTION:This paper seeks to analyze an under-discussed kind of self-control\, namely the control of thoughts and sensations. I distinguish first-order control from second-order control and argue that their central forms are intentional concentration and intentional mindfulness respectively. These correspond to two forms of meditation\, concentration meditation and mindfulness meditation\, which have been regarded as central both in the traditions in which the practices arose and in the scientific literature on meditation. I analyze them in terms of their characteristic intentions\, distingush them from concentration and mindfulness in general\, and examine the relations between them. Concentration involves keeping the mind focused on a single object\, while mindfulness requires noticing whatever mental states occupy the focus of one’s consciousness. In the course of the investigation I examine the role of phenomenology and volition in the activity of meditating\, and how they change as meditative capacities develop. \nAbout: \nNoa Latham is an Associate Professor of Philosophy at the University of Calgary. SUMMARY:Casey O'Callaghan "The Multisensory Character of Perception"
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: My thesis is that perceptual awareness itself is richly multisensory. I argue for this conclusion on the grounds that certain forms of multisensory perceptual experience are incompatible with the claim that each aspect of a perceptual experience is associated with some specific sensory modality or another. First\, I explicate what it is for some feature of a conscious perceptual episode to be associated with a given modality\, or to be modality specific\, since no clear criterion yet exists in the literature on multisensory perception. Then\, I argue based on philosophical and experimental evidence that some novel intermodal features are perceptible only through the coordinated use of multiple senses. The cases to which I appeal involve consciously perceptible feature instances and feature types that could not be perceptually experienced through the use of individual sense modalities working on their own or simply in parallel. Thus\, not every feature of a conscious perceptual episode is associated with some specific modality or another. Finally\, I offer an account of how to type perceptual experiences by modality that makes room for richly multisensory experiences. SUMMARY:Shelly Wilcox: "Immigration Justice in Nonideal Circumstances"
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: \nIn recent years\, political philosophers have begun to interrogate the methodology they use to construct normative principles. Some have voiced the concern that prevailing liberal egalitarian principles are constructed under idealized assumptions and thus are ill-suited to real-world circumstances where such assumptions do not apply. Specifically\, critics have raised three related objections to so-called ideal theory: (1) ideal theory cannot help us understand current injustices in the actual\, nonideal world; (2) ideal principles are not sufficiently action-guiding; and (3) ideal theory is counterproductive or even dangerous because it tends to reflect and perpetuate illicit group privilege. \nThis paper explores recent work on the ethics of immigration in light of these methodological criticisms\, focusing on the open borders debate. The central question in this debate is whether liberal states have a moral right to restrict immigration. I argue that prominent arguments on both sides of this issue are subject to the standard criticisms of ideal theory\, and thus that a nonideal normative approach to immigration in urgently needed. I then develop several methodological desiderata for such an approach and draw upon these criteria to outline the broad contours of an adequate nonideal theory of justice in immigration. \n*** \nBiography: \nShelley Wilcox is Professor of Philosophy at San Francisco State University. She works in the areas of social and political philosophy\, feminist philosophy\, and applied ethics\, with a special interest in immigration\, global justice\, and urban environmental issues. SUMMARY:Envisioning Central Coast Water in 2030: Ecology\, Equity\, Ingenuity
DESCRIPTION:Governor Jerry Brown’s recent move to implement mandatory state-wide drought restrictions re-affirms growing uncertainties about California’s water future. Images of dwindling rainfall and worsening drought often re-enforce popular perceptions of impending shortages as chiefly physical phenomena\, restricting possibilities for robust and innovative responses through the social sphere. In the Central Coast\, in particular\, seemingly intractable divisions between public water agencies and homeowners’ coalitions\, between groundwater aquifers and the needs of agriculture and between people and fish result in a fragmented political and ecological landscape where polarizing battles are not only seen as normal\, but self-evident. This cocktail hour will invite participants to engage in an uncommon civic dialogue to imagine and envision what broad-based\, collective interventions for Central Coast water might look like. Participants from all backgrounds will be strongly encouraged to share and discuss innovative suggestions for how a more ecologically-sound\, socially-equitable water plan might be drafted and implemented. Using the year 2030 as a horizon\, participants will have the opportunity to share suggestions and expertise across disciplinary boundaries and to consider whether and how competing visions for Central Coast water might be reconciled.

DESCRIPTION:Abstract: \nMany philosophers of memory have wondered whether or not it is indispensible to postulate the existence of memory traces to explain remembering. In this talk I will offer an argument in favor of the explanatory indispensability of memory traces. To that end\, I will begin by demonstrating that the main arguments in favor of the claim that we need memory traces to explain remembering share the logical structure of a inference to the best explanation. As a result\, most arguments against the claim that we need memory traces to explain remembering aim to show that we can have equally successful explanations that do not require the postulation of such entities. So far\, I have explored ways in which episodic memory both guides and constrains episodic counterfactual thinking (i.e.\, thoughts about alternative ways in which past personal events could have occurred)\, and how this interaction affects the perceived plausibility of imagined counterfactual events. I also explore the differential contribution of episodic and semantic memory in the generation of different kinds of counterfactual simulations\, as well as the effect of counterfactual thinking on the memories they derive from. In addition\, my research attempts to understand how prior experience helps to constrain the way in which we reconstruct episodic memories. Finally\, I am also interested in the role of internal attention during conscious recollection. DESCRIPTION:Abstract: \nBias is becoming an increasingly central topic in both moral psychology and bioethics. We have ample evidence that biases shape our interactions\, including interactions between health professionals and patients\, in complicated and penetrating ways that are resistant to first person access and to manipulation. Typically\, biases are presumed to be distortions at the level of individual cognitive processes. I examine how bias can be built into the institutions\, spaces\, policies\, and practices of medicine\, quite apart from any person-level cognitive distortions. I examine three types of examples: (1) judgments of scientific uncertainty and epistemic risk in health care research and delivery; (2) material medical environments that perpetuate specific ideological distortions; (3) the inflation of drug-treatable diseases and the overvaluing of pharmaceutical interventions. The upshot is that bias in medicine requires structural solutions\, not just the ‘education’ of individuals. \nAbout: \nRebecca Kukla is a Professor of Philosophy at Georgetown University and a Senior Research Scholar at the Kennedy Institute of Ethics. Her research interests include social epistemology (including the epistemology and methodology of medical research)\, philosophy of language\, feminist philosophy\, metaethics\, reproductive ethics and the culture of pregnancy and motherhood\, and research ethics. Much of her research bridges ethics\, epistemology\, and philosophy of language. She also has serious interests in eighteenth century philosophy\, especially the work of Rousseau and Kant. \nShe received her B.A. in Philosophy from the University of Toronto in 1990 and her Ph.D. in Philosophy from the University of Pittsburgh in 1996. From 2003-2005\, she was a Greenwall Fellow in Bioethics and Health Policy at The Johns Hopkins University. In the summer of 2004\, she was a Visiting Scholar at the USDA\, studying ethical issues concerning food and nutrition assistance programs. SUMMARY:Eric Schwitzgebel: "The Moral Behavior of Ethics Professors"
DESCRIPTION:Do professional ethicists behave any morally better than do non-ethicists of similar social background? If not\, do they at least show greater consistency between their normative attitudes and their outward behavior? Despite a long philosophical tradition associating philosophical reflection with improved moral behavior\, these questions have never been empirically examined. I describe four possible models of the relationship between philosophical moral reflection and real-world moral behavior (boosterism\, epiphenomenalism\, rationalization\, and inert discovery). I then present convergent evidence from studies of about a dozen different types of moral behavior. The results suggest that ethicists behave no morally better on average or any more consistently with their espoused values\, compared to other groups of professors. Using a combination of direct observation and self-report measures\, I examine: the misappropriation of library books\, voting in public elections\, courtesy at professional meetings\, responsiveness to student emails\, charitable donation\, organ and blood donation\, staying in touch with one’s mother\, vegetarianism\, honesty in responses to surveys\, nonpayment of conference registration fees\, Nazi party membership in the 1930s\, and peer evaluation of overall moral behavior. The overall results will be compared with the predictions of the four models. \nEric Schwitzgebel is a Professor of Philosophy at UC Riverside. DESCRIPTION:Lucas McGranahan: “Darwinism and Pragmatism: William James on Evolution and Self-Transformation” \nThursday November 20\, 2:00 – 3:45 pm\nCrown 208\, UC Santa Cruz \nAbstract\nWilliam James presages twentieth-century Neo-Darwinism in his physiological approach to\nmental life\, his early repudiation of the inheritance of acquired characteristics\, and his\ncreative extension of the concepts of variation and selection to a variety of non-biological\ndomains. Indeed\, James was the first ‘double-barreled’ Darwinian psychologist in that he\nwas the first to explain individual learning and phylogenetic mental evolution in terms of\nanalogous processes of variation and selection. However\, the chief lessons of Darwinism\nfor James were not the materialism\, mechanism\, or reductionism of later Neo-Darwinism\,\nbut rather (1) the idea that both science and philosophy are open-ended processes of\nfallible\, inductive guesswork\, and (2) the idea of consciousness as an evolved and\nefficacious ‘fighter for ends.’ In short\, Darwinism for James signals a world that is both\ntheoretically and actually ‘in the making\,’ with the individual as an active participant. \nBio\nLucas McGranahan is an independent scholar and nonprofit professional living in Oakland\,\nCalifornia. He holds a B.A. in Philosophy and English from the University of Wisconsin\,\nMadison\, and a Ph.D. in Philosophy from the University of California\, Santa Cruz. In\n2011 he won the Douglas Greenlee Prize for best paper by an early-career scholar from\nthe Society for the Advancement of American Philosophy\, and he is the recipient of\nmultiple teaching honors from the University of California\, Santa Cruz. He has published\non evolutionary theory and pragmatism in The Pluralist.
