SUMMARY:CANCELLED - Jacque Wernimont "Quantified Education: Unpacking What We're Tracking"
DESCRIPTION:The same hopes that have landed FitBits on millions of wrists\, Rings on thousands of doors\, and Echoes in so many homes have brought us the latest in educational technologies. These hopes include better support of ourselves\, our goals\, and our dreams for success\, health\, and safety. As universities and colleges increasingly buy into smart systems for grading\, tracking attendance\, monitoring student and employee wellness\, and more\, we also need to reckon with the costs – human\, fiscal\, and environmental – of these innovations in education. We‘ve got the Quantified Self\, the Quantified Home\, even the Smart/Quantified City — what does it mean that we now have Quantified Education? \n  \nJacqueline Wernimont is an antiracist\, feminist scholar working toward greater justice in digital cultures. She writes about long histories of media and technology—particularly those that count and commemorate—and entanglements with archives and historiographic ways of knowing. Her book\, Numbered Lives: Life and Death in Quantum Media\, is out with MIT Press. She is a network weaver across humanities\, arts\, and sciences. This work includes codirecting HASTAC (Humanities\, Arts\, Science\, and Technology Alliance and Collaboratory) and serving as the Inaugural Chair of Digital Humanities and Social Engagement at Dartmouth College. \n  \nPresented by:  The Humanities Institute at UC Santa Cruz and the Center for Innovations in Teaching and Learning. \n  \nAdditional Events: Jacqueline Wernimont will be at UC Santa Cruz from April 8th-10th\, 2020 as THI’s Scholar-in-Residence. SUMMARY:Balancing Fair Use and Student Access in Selecting Course Texts: A Workshop for Instructors
DESCRIPTION:  \nAbout the workshop: Understanding how to balance equitable access to course texts with our ethical and legal responsibility to uphold the values of intellectual property can often be challenging. This workshop will help faculty navigate the complexities of copyright and fair use and focus on best practices and resources for choosing course texts for our Humanities classrooms. Faculty will come away with a better understanding of how to protect themselves while at the same time lowering textbook cost for their students. \nAll faculty instructors (Senate and non-Senate) are strongly encouraged to attend this workshop. Graduate student teaching fellows and associate-ins are also welcome to attend. \nWorkshop activities will be facilitated by Phillip Longo\, Lecturer in the Writing Program\, and Annette Marines\, Arts and Humanities Librarian at McHenry Library. \nLunch will be served \nThis workshop is part of a series presented by the Humanities Teaching and Learning Now project of The Humanities Institute. DESCRIPTION:“Intentional Design: Making Assignments that Work\,” with Jessie Dubreuil\, Kimberly Helmer\, Philip Longo\, Tonya Ritola\, and Heather Shearer \nThis is the second teaching workshop of The Humanities Institute research cluster “Teaching and Learning in the Humanities Now”\, designed to promote collective conversations about how we teach in the humanities now. Whether you teach a large lecture course or a small seminar\, join us to explore and discuss best practices for assignment design that go beyond the traditional essay. Writing Program faculty will introduce research-based strategies to promote conceptual thinking and build competency. The interactive workshop will provide faculty with strategies to apply to current or future assignments. Please bring an assignment you would like to work on.
