SUMMARY:Never Again is Now: Japanese American Women Activists and the Legacy of the Mass Incarceration Opening Reception
DESCRIPTION:Japanese American women who experienced the World War II mass incarceration have a long history of activism that includes protests within the camps\, participation in the social movements of the 1960s\, and the successful campaign for a national apology and monetary redress. They\, their daughters\, granddaughters\, and non-binary individuals continue to invoke memories of the World War II injustice to defend the rights of all people of color in their activism and art.  \nShowing the powerful connection between the past and the present\, this exhibit highlights how women’s historical memories helped win redress\, challenged racial and gender stereotypes\, promoted intergenerational ties\, and developed coalitions with other communities fighting discrimination based on race\, national origin\, religion\, immigration status\, gender\, and sexual orientation. \n \nThis exhibit was curated by Associate History Professor Alice Yang and sponsored by The Humanities Institute\, The Humanities Division\, and the California Civil Liberties Public Education Fund.

SUMMARY:The Kapany Collection–Sikh Art in America
DESCRIPTION:The Eloise Pickard Smith Gallery brings you a remarkable collection of Sikh art from Narinder S. and Satinder K. Kapany. Narinder S. Kapany established an endowed chair in entrepreneurship\, the Narinder Kapany Professorship in Entrepreneurship\, based initially at UCSC’s Baskin School of Engineering in support of the school’s leadership in the establishment of a comprehensive entrepreneurship program for the campus. This was the second endowed chair funded by Kapany\, who was a Regents Professor at UC Santa Cruz from 1977 to 1983 as well as a UC Santa Cruz Foundation Trustee. In 1999\, he endowed the Narinder Singh Kapany Chair in Optoelectronics at the Baskin School of Engineering. Kapany\, a Sikh\, was a research scientist\, entrepreneur\, art collector and philanthropist\, he is widely acknowledged as the father of fiber optics. \nThis unique exhibit introduces both Sikh art and ethos as well as a historical look at the Sikh migration and history from Punjab to America\, and more specifically California. It is our objective to enlighten the audience as to what and who the Sikh religion and people represent and their relevance\, not just here\, but around the world. \nThe main gallery displays a rare collection of both antique and contemporary art which does well to establish the history of the Sikh religion beginning with the spiritual teachings of Guru Nanak\, the first Guru (1469–1539)\, and of the nine Sikh gurus who succeeded him. Works reflect the gurus\, gurdwaras\, the Golden Temple–preeminent spiritual site of Sikhism\, rituals and religious communities. Three phulkaris\, loosely translated as  ”flower work”\, (large embroidered textiles in silk and cotton) draw inspiration from the wheat\, corn and barley farmed in much of Punjab. Lastly\, a set of intricately painted miniatures\, portraits on bone and ivory of the court and family\, often given to visiting dignitaries.\nThe Ann Dizikes Annex features a graphic timeline depicting the migration of the Sikhs in the late 1800’s to the present day. It presents a rich story of the important events and people that brought to life the current Sikh population we see today with its gurdwaras\, community\, agricultural and scientific contributions. \nThis is an exhibit not to be missed. We encourage all to come enjoy the magnificent art and the interesting\, rich culture and history of the Sikh people and their religion.

How was it created? An Uncommon Place traces decisive moments in the site’s early development. Here an innovative educational project engaged with a beautiful and challenging environment. The university took shape among steep ravines and dramatic trees in a way that respected as it transformed the landscape. Using architectural plans\, photographs\, and oral histories\, the exhibition illustrates paths taken and not taken-decisions\, constraints\, and hopes. It celebrates the achievement of UCSC’s founding planners while analyzing the tensions and contradictions that were built into their project. Through its many subsequent transformations\, the UC Santa Cruz campus remains an extraordinary work of environmental art. \nRemembering these formative years can perhaps help us renew a powerful utopian experiment. DESCRIPTION:Debra Olin: Images and  Nathaniel Deutsch: Text\n\nSeptember 27 – October 11\, 2011\nOpening reception: Tuesday\, September 27\, 4-7pm\n \nEloise Pickard Smith Gallery\, Cowell College\, UC Santa Cruz\n \n \nUntil 1917\, most Jews of the Russian Empire were restricted to a region called the Pale of Settlement\, where they created their own distinctive folk culture. In 1914 the writer\, socialist revolutionary\, and ethnographer\, Sh. An-sky\, produced a massive Yiddish ethnographic questionnaire to document this culture\, including many questions concerning Jewish customs and beliefs connected to pregnancy and childbirth. In The Jewish Dark Continent: Life and Death in the Russian Pale of Settlement (Harvard University Press)\, UCSC professor Nathaniel Deutsch has translated An-sky’s questionnaire into English for the first time\, placing it within a rich historical context. Collaborating with Deutsch and inspired by her deep interest in Jewish women’s folk traditions\, Debra Olin has created illuminating artworks that represent and explore the dangerous\, magical\, and\, above all\, powerful experience of pregnancy and childbirth in the Pale of Settlement. \nDebra Olin is a printmaker\, living and working in Somerville\, Massachusetts. She received her MFA from Massachusetts College of Art in 1980. Olin has shown in exhibitions across the U.S.\, South Africa and Cuba. Her work is in the permanent collections of the Boston Public Library; Temple Israel\, Brookline\, Mass.; YIVO Institute\, NYC; The DeCordova Museum\, Lincoln\, Mass.; and the Fogg Art Museum\, Harvard University. In 2004 Debra was awarded the Rappaport Prize\, the largest public annual award to an individual artist in New England.
