DESCRIPTION:The Humanities Institute and the Center for Creative Ecologies present Beyond the End of the World Lecture Series. \n Just Futures\, a highly anticipated exhibition featuring the works of Arthur Jafa\, Martine Syms\, and Black Quantum Futurism\, curated by Professor T.J. Demos\, History of Art and Visual Culture\, opens at the Mary Porter Sesnon Gallery February 1- March 19\, 2022. We are excited to welcome the public back to the Sesnon Art Gallery after a nearly two-year hiatus. \nAgainst the present’s seemingly endless backdrop of deep political unrest\, environmental emergency\, and racialized injustice\, Just Futures highlights poignant creative experiments in futurity and justice\, directed at emancipatory worlds-to-come. With artworks by Black Quantum Futurism\, Arthur Jafa\, and Martine Syms\, Just Futures considers how time itself is a site of struggle and a horizon of liberation. The centerpiece of the exhibition\, Arthur Jafa’s Love Is The Message\, The Message Is Death (2016)\, was screened simultaneously over 48 hours across art museums in 2020 as an international response to racial justice uprisings and civil unrest. Far from homogenous\, inherently progressive\, or equitable\, dominant time expresses the 24/7 chronologies of capital\, long synchronized to racialized\, gendered violence and oppression. The seemingly endless meter of production encloses people in temporal holds\, defuturing communities\, and imposing time-traps of debt and deadlines. \nThe artworks included in Just Futures powerfully reveal and challenge such temporality\, including its seeming fixity and policed regimentation. In doing so\, they build on the critical resources of Afrofuturisms of decades past—experiments in sonic and visual futurity that draw together Afro-diasporic cultures of creativity and the chronopolitics of coming liberation. Expanding horizons of the possible\, the artists presented in Just Futures reveal new singular experiments in time travel. They cultivate space agency that dismantle the “Master(s) Clock(work Universe)” (Black Quantum Futurism); present a stunning cinematic exploration of African-American image archives opposing police brutality with scenes of freedom dreams and anti-racist struggle (Arthur Jafa); and offer a “Mundane Afrofuturist Manifesto” contesting the entire edifice of racial capitalism (Martine Syms). Each inclusion provokes compelling and urgent recalibrations of justice and futurity. \nThis exhibition forms part of Beyond the End of the World\, which comprises a year-long research and exhibition project and public lecture series\, directed by T. J. Demos of UCSC’s Center for Creative Ecologies. The project brings leading international thinkers and cultural practitioners to UC Santa Cruz to discuss what lies beyond dystopian catastrophism\, and asks how we can cultivate radical futures of social justice and ecological flourishing. DESCRIPTION:We Are Not Aliens: Arthur Jafa\, Martine Syms\, and Afro-Futurism 2.0 assembles select artistic projects that investigate emancipatory futures of justice opposed to historical and contemporary racism\, socioeconomic inequality\, and state violence. It centers around Arthur Jafa’s startling and moving video “Love is the Message\, the Message is Death\,” which offers a short account of anti-black police brutality as well as speculative visions of African-American emancipation\, collective resistance\, and poetic love. The piece includes a short passage of artist Martine Syms delivering her “Mundane Afrofuturist Manifesto” in which she states “We are not aliens”—critically distancing herself from earlier formulations of Afro-futurism and making a powerful case for its contemporary reinvention. The show will reproduce her text as an artistic wall painting and also include an hour-long KCET video that explores the inspirational ideas behind the Manifesto\, which lays out visions of African-American creativity dedicated to the radical imagination of a coming world of liberation. \nThe exhibition forms part of Beyond the End of the World\, which comprises a year-long research and exhibition project and public lecture series\, directed by T. DESCRIPTION:The Gail Project Exhibition – An Okinawan-American Dialogue at the Sesnon Gallery\, Porter College \nOpening Reception: Thursday\, October 5\, 5:00-7:00 pm\nExhibition run dates:\nThu\, Oct 5\, 2017 to Sat\, Dec 2\, 2017 \nWeekly events every Wednesday 6-8pm. \nClosed for Thanksgiving Holiday November 23- 27 \nThe Gail Project is a collaborative\, international public history project that explores the founding years of the American military occupation of Okinawa. The project is inspired by a collection of photos taken in Okinawa in 1952 by an American Army Captain: Charles Eugene Gail. The photos were generously donated to Special Collections at McHenry Library by Charles’ daughter\, Geri Gail\, and have since been made available for student research. Our team of faculty\, staff\, and undergraduate students at the University of California\, Santa Cruz\, are developing a traveling exhibition of Gail’s photographs with an accompanying digital archive that is comprised of the photos\, key texts and documents\, and oral histories from both America and Okinawa. SUMMARY:Lewis Watts: New Orleans Suite\, First Friday - Curator's Walk Through
DESCRIPTION:New Orleans Suite presents a window into the landscape of life in New Orleans before and after Hurricane Katrina. Vivid black and white photography exposes the contrast of devastation and humanity in such a rich sector of American jazz culture. Additionally the gallery will showcase some of Watts’ new work from Cuba\, where he is continuing his photographic research \nLewis Watts is a photographer\, archivist and Professor of Art at the University of California\, Santa Cruz. He is co-author of “Harlem of the West\, The San Francisco Fillmore Jazz Era” which consists of found photographs and oral histories of an African American Community that sprang up as a result of the migration west during WW II and that was “urban renewed” out of existence in the late 1960s.
