SUMMARY:Cabrillo Festival of Contemporary Music: Let Me See The Sun
DESCRIPTION:Four composers will join you in the audience for our second night as Maestro Măcelaru leads the Cabrillo Festival Orchestra in the West Coast premiere of Iván Enrique Rodríguez’ A Metaphor for Power—reflecting on our ideals of equality in America\, as seen through the lens of the composer’s Latinx experience. \nIván Enrique Rodríguez: A Metaphor for Power (WCP)\nStacy Garrop: The Battle for the Ballot (WCP | Festival Commission)\n(Texts from seven suffragists; Valerie Joi\, narrator)\nPaola Prestini: Let Me See the Sun (Lara Downes\, piano)\nJohn Harbison: The Great Gatsby Suite (WCP) \n \nStacy Garrop’s The Battle for the Ballot was commissioned by the Cabrillo Festival in 2020 to commemorate the centenary of women’s suffrage in America and incorporates the words of seven prominent Black and white suffragists\, read by narrator Valerie Joi. It receives its West Coast premiere performance tonight\, after a spectacular virtual premiere in 2020. \nA second work celebrates voting rights and the passage of the 19th Amendment: Paola Prestini’s piano concerto Let Me See the Sun\, which features trailblazing pianist Lara Downes. Prestini is hailed by the New York Times as an “imaginative composer\,” as Let Me See the Sun demonstrates with an infusion of folk music\, virtuosity\, dissonance\, and vocal simplicity. The concerto is about the human impulse to remain hopeful\, structured as a dialogue between piano and orchestra\, at times contentious and at times unified. \nPulitzer Prize-winning composer John Harbison is an 84-year old American master who has yet to be featured at Cabrillo Festival—until now. Harbison’s music is “rich with lyrical outpourings” (New York Times) that are filtered through his “rigorously crafted language” (Strings Magazine). The Great Gatsby Suite—adapted from his opera\, based on the novel by F. Scott Fitzgerald—abounds in cakewalks\, ragtime and jazz\, and includes saxophones and banjo. Composed in 2007\, the work receives its West Coast premiere tonight. \nCovid-19 public health and safety guidelines will be followed\, including requiring proof of full vaccination for all audiences\, staff\, and artists. Masking will be required indoors at all times. Read our full Covid Policy here. \nConcert sponsored by The Humanities Institute.

SUMMARY:Kimberlé Crenshaw: 34th Annual Martin Luther King Jr Memorial Convocation
DESCRIPTION:The annual convocation celebrates the life and dream of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. by presenting speakers who discuss the civil rights issues of equality\, freedom\, justice\, and opportunity. The convocation also seeks to build partnerships and develop dialogue within the campus community and with the local communities served by the university. \nSpeaker: Kimberlé Crenshaw\nProfessor of law at UCLA and Columbia Law School\, leading authority on civil rights\, black feminist legal theory\, and race\, racism\, and the law.\n \nHarriet’s Legacy: Navigating Intersectionality in the Age of Trump \nPositioned at the crossroads of race and gender\, women and girls of color face unique barriers under the burdens of both sexism and racism. This is especially true in the wake of the 2016 election\, as discrimination\, racialized hate speech and gendered violence have been normalized and\, seemingly encouraged\, by the White House. As we enter the 2nd year under the current administration\, we must reflect back not only on the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.\, but of the Black women who\, although often misremembered or outright forgotten\, fought for civil rights and equality throughout history. In this lecture\, Professor Kimberlé Crenshaw will utilize a historical analysis with an intersectional lens to expose the impact of institutional oppression within marginalized communities’ configured networks between identities\, i.e. race\, gender\, and socioeconomic status\, a reflect on the contemporary legacy of social justice and the continued struggle for equality in the United States. \nRead More

Her work as an educator – both at the university level and in the larger public sphere – has always emphasized the importance of building communities of struggle for economic\, racial\, and gender equality. She is Distinguished Professor Emerita of History of Consciousness and Feminist Studies at UC Santa Cruz\, and the author of nine books\, including her most recent book of essays called The Meaning of Freedom. \nIn recent years a persistent theme of her work has been the range of social problems associated with incarceration and the generalized criminalization of those communities that are most affected by poverty and racial discrimination. She draws upon her own experiences in the early seventies as a person who spent eighteen months in jail and on trial\, after being placed on the FBI’s “Ten Most Wanted List.” \nShe is a founding member of Critical Resistance\, a national organization dedicated to the dismantling of the prison industrial complex. Internationally\, she is affiliated with Sisters Inside\, an abolitionist organization based in Queensland\, Australia that works in solidarity with women in prison. \nHaving helped to popularize the notion of a “prison industrial complex\,” she now urges her audiences to think seriously about the future possibility of a world without prisons and to help forge a 21st century abolitionist movement. \nAlso featuring a performance by: Singer and songwriter\, AlexisRose \n \nMore Info\n \n  \n\n  \nUCSC Shuttles\nUC Santa Cruz shuttles will be provided to students for transportation to the Civic Auditorium and return to campus after the event.\nBeginning at the campus main entrance at 5:30pm and 6:30pm\, the shuttle will make all stops along the perimeter route to pickup students\, exit the west entrance\, and arrive at the Civic at app. 6:00pm and 7:00pm. SUMMARY:Free Family Concert: A Conference of the Birds Cabrillo Festival Orchestra\, conductor Marin Alsop
DESCRIPTION:The Cabrillo Festival’s wildly popular Free Family Concert introduces kids to the wonderful world of orchestral music. It begins with a Tour of the Orchestra where kids can make an up-close and personal connection to the different instruments and players. This year we’ll feature a world premiere Festival Commission composed and narrated by Jonathan Sheffer. The Conference of the Birds was inspired by a Persian folk tale about a flock of birds on a spiritual journey\, and explores the orchestra’s ability to imitate the chirps\, coos\, and calls of our feathered friends.
