DESCRIPTION:The Humanities Division and Feminist Studies department are very excited to announce the Peggy and Jack Baskin Foundation Presidential Chair in Feminist Studies at UC Santa Cruz. This endowed chair was recently established with a $500\,000 gift from the Peggy and Jack Baskin Foundation and matching funds from the UC Regents. Continuous shuttle service to Stevenson Event Center will be available from 1:15 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Barn Theater. \n \nAbout Bettina Aptheker \n \nBettina Aptheker is a nationally recognized historian and a scholar of feminist studies. She received her Ph.D. in History of Consciousness from UC Santa Cruz and became the first ladder-rank faculty member of the Feminist Studies Department\, then known as Women’s Studies\, in 1987. For nearly three decades Bettina has taught one of the country’s largest and most influential introductory feminist studies courses\, exposing more than 10\,000 students to her deeply compelling teaching. Bettina works extensively with graduate students in Feminist Studies\, and other departments\, and teaches graduate seminars\, including Feminist Pedagogy and Black Feminist Reconstruction. She has received numerous awards over the years\, and in June will be presented with the Dizikes Faculty Teaching Award in the Humanities. \nAbout the The Peggy and Jack Baskin Foundation \n \nThe Peggy and Jack Baskin Foundation currently focuses on improving the lives of women and girls and ensuring equal access to education for all community members. UC Santa Cruz and the Peggy and Jack Baskin Foundation have been partnering on advancing innovative and impactful scholarship for many years. The foundation has funded the Baskin Feminist Scholars Program and the Baskin Scholars Program in Engineering that enable community college students to transfer to UC Santa Cruz\, underwritten fellowships to women doctoral students in engineering\, offered scholarships to women transfer students\, and funded the summer Girls in Engineering program for middle-school girls since its inception. With this new Presidential Chair\, the Peggy and Jack Baskin Foundation is leading the way in support of teaching and research in feminist studies at UC Santa Cruz. \n  \n

Precarity\, the experience of insecurity and constant risk of exclusion\, is central to the experience of many labor migrants and citizen-workers in our time. Today’s labor migrants are new denizens—residents or inhabitants who are not quite full members of society. They are incorporated into societies that desire their labor\, but reject their very presence. Meanwhile\, citizen-workers are exposed to new forms of vulnerability as social rights\, such as education\, health care\, and retirement\, are increasingly privatized\, made contingent\, or dissolved altogether. He is the author of many books\, including Relatos de la diferencia y la igualdad: los bolivianos en Buenos Aires (Eudeba\, 1999) and Los límites de la cultura: crítica de las teorías de la identidad (Siglo XXI Argentina\, 2011)\, winner of the Latin American Studies Association’s Premio Iberoamericano for best book of the year. \nJuan Poblete is Professor of Literature and Co-principal Investigator of Non-citizenship\, UC Santa Cruz’s Andrew W. Mellon Foundation Sawyer Seminar. His broad and myriad research interests include nineteenth-century Latin American literature\, nation and nationalism\, and popular culture in the Americas. His most recent publications include Sports and Nationalism in Latin America (with Héctor Fernández L’Hoeste and Robert McKee-Irwin\, Palgrave\, 2015) and Humor in Latin American Cinema (with Juana Suárez\, Palgrave\, 2016). \nGuy Standing\, Professor of Development Studies at the School of Oriental and African Studies at the University of London\, is a scholar of labor\, globalization\, citizenship\, and social movements. His most recent books include A Precariat Charter: From Denizens to Citizens (Bloomsbury Academic Press\, 2014) and The Precariat: The New Dangerous Class (Bloomsbury Academic Press\, 2011). From 1999 until March 2006\, he was director of the Socio-Economic Security Programme of the International Labour Organisation in Geneva\, Switzerland. \nBiao Xiang\, Professor of Social Anthropology at the University of Oxford\, specializes in labor\, migration\, and social change in Asia. An ethnographer\, he has studied migration from rural China to Beijing\, migrant Indian information technology engineers in Australia\, and unskilled labor migration from China to Japan\, South Korea\, and Singapore. DESCRIPTION:The Department of Languages and Applied Linguistics\, Cowell College\, and Stevenson College\, will present The Miriam Ellis International Playhouse (MEIP)\, an annual multilingual program of fully-staged short theater pieces\, for its 16th season. Three public performances will be held on May 25\, 26\, and 27 (Wed. – Fri.) at 8:00 PM at the Stevenson Event Center\, UCSC\, and will feature works in French\, Japanese\, Russian\, and Spanish\, with English super-titles projected above the stage. The program will be directed by Language lecturers and performed by Language students. There is no admission charge\, with nearby parking at $4.00. \nThis year’s works include: (in French) Scenes from TARTUFFE\, by Molière\, directed by Miriam Ellis; (in Japanese) BEST FRIENDS\, by Yuuki Himura & Osamu Shitara\, directed by Sakae Fujita; (in Russian) UNCLE FYODOR\, THE DOG AND THE CAT\, by Edward Uspensky\, directed by Natalya Samokhina and her students; (in Spanish) THE BAT\, based on a myth by Eduardo Galeano\, directed by Marta Navarro. SUMMARY:Alan Christy: "The Keystone of the Pacific: A History of America in Okinawa"
DESCRIPTION:A plan by the U.S. and Japan to build a new military base in a place called Henoko has brought Okinawa into the news lately. Prof. Christy\, an expert in the history of Japan\, social science\, colonialism\, and nationalism\, will present a history of American Japanese post WWII relations specifically as they pertain to Okinawa. This will set the stage for looking at modern relations with Okinawa\, where a recent gubernatorial election revealed strong opposition to the base construction. \nAlan S. Christy is Associate Professor of History\, East Asian Studies Director\, and Co-Director\, Center for the Study of Pacific War Memories.\n  \nOsher Lifelong Learning Institute at UCSC General Meetings \nOur members gather monthly\, September through May inclusive\, except in December\, on the third Sunday from 10 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. in the Stevenson College Event Center to socialize\, conduct business\, and hear a speaker\, often a UCSC professor. We greet\, meet\, and eat (coffee & cake)\, and interact with a speaker of note. At the first meeting of the year after the summer break\, in September\, in lieu of hearing from a speaker\, we find out about and sign-up for interest groups.

SUMMARY:International Playhouse XIII
DESCRIPTION:The Language Program\, Cowell College\, and Stevenson College cordially invite you and your students to attend a performance of The Miriam Ellis International Playhouse XIII (IP)\, an annual multilingual program of fully-staged short theater pieces\, now in its 13th season. Four public performances will be held on May 16\, 17\, 18\, 19\, at 8:00 PM at the Stevenson Event Center and will feature works in French\, Italian\, Japanese\, and Spanish\, with English super-titles. The program will be directed by Language lecturers\, working with their students. There is no admission charge; however\, evening parking permits are required for the Thursday and Friday performances. Parking permits will be available by attendant in the Cowell/Stevenson lower parking lots (#109/110) for $4.00. Those already in possession of a valid “A”\, “B”\, or “C” permit do not need to purchase an additional permit to park during evening hours. \nThis year’s works include excerpts from (French) LE MALADE IMAGINAIRE (The Hypochondriac) by Molière\, directed by Miriam Ellis; (Italian) NATIVITÀ (Nativity) by La Smorfia\, directed by Giulia Centineo; (Japanese) THE VAMPIRE CABBIE by Murakami\, directed by Sakae Fujita; (Spanish) LAS LUCIÉRNAGAS DEL CARIBE (Caribbean Fireflies) by Carballido\, directed by Marta Navarro.

Presentations from faculty in each academic division\, Learning Technologies\, and UCSC Extension. Although the event runs from 3-5:00 p.m.\, dropping by for just 20 minutes would allow you to visit a couple of tables and be inspired.

SUMMARY:The Sikh: The Feminine\, The Activist
DESCRIPTION:Sikhi is like an ocean\, boundless and all encompassing\, composed of many shades and hues. During this conference\, we will explore two of these colors. First\, we will delve into the feminine aspect of spirituality and how it is characterized by the words of the Sikh Gurus\, and the importance of women in Sikh tradition. Secondly\, we will look at activism and social justice\, understanding how they have been integral to Sikh spirituality from the beginning\, and discussing their relevance today. \n\n  \nSpeakers \nDr. Nikky Guninder Kaur Singh\nThe Crawford Family Professor at Colby College in Maine\, USA. Her interests focus on poetry and feminist issues. She has published extensively in the field of Sikhism\, and her areas of expertise are major religions of northern India\, Indian women’s issues\, role of women in religious literature\, and literary analysis of scripture. \nBalpreet Kaur\nA sophomore at Ohio State University\, she is a part of the executive board of the Better Together team\, president of the Sikh Student Association\, and a Humanities Scholar. \nDr. Jaideep Singh\nAn expert in comparative ethnic studies and the first American educated endowed chair holder in Sikh Studies in the country. \nDr. Seema Kaur\nThe United Sikhs Regional Director for Community Empowerment and Education and Business Development. SUMMARY:The Noel Q. King Memorial Lecture: "Interfaith Perspectives on Economic Justice\, and its implications for the worldwide Occupy movement"
DESCRIPTION:The Noel Q. King Memorial Lecture series celebrates the work of the late Noel King\, founding father and Professor of History and Comparative Religion at UC Santa Cruz. The series reflects Noel’s lifelong commitment to\, and joy in\, dialogue between the faiths. \nFor the 2012 NQK Lecture\, representatives of four of the world’s great religions join in conversation: \nInterfaith Perspectives on Economic Justice\, and its implications for the worldwide Occupy movement.\nChed Myers\, leading the discussion\, is a fifth generation Californian who has spent three decades working with faith-based peace and justice organizations\, including the American Friends Service Committee\, the Pacific Concerns Resource Center\, and the Pacific Life Community. He is currently with the Bartimaeus Cooperative Ministries\, focusing on building capacity for biblical literacy\, church renewal\, and faith based witness for justice. \nRabbi and Congregational Cantor Paula Marcus has served Temple Beth El since 1979. She was ordained as a Rabbi in May\, 2004 by the Academy for Jewish Religion in Los Angeles and has apprenticed with cantors in the U.S. and Israel. She received her BA in Judaic studies from SUNY at Binghamton and\nher MA degree in Rabbinic studies from the Academy of Jewish Religion. \nImam Zaid Shakir is an American Muslim scholar with a background in politics and international relations. His work balances the academic and spiritual study of Islam with being a voice of conscience in issues of race\, peace\, and poverty\, for Muslims and non-Muslims alike. He has been ranked one of America’s most influential Muslim scholars. \nDr. Inder Mohan Singh\, an entrepreneur in Silicon Valley\, has been instrumental in founding several technology companies as well as the Chardi Kalaa Foundation\, which fosters a sense of community and reinforces Sikh values. Dr. Singh is the Chairman of LynuxWorks and cofounder of Excelan and Kalpana. SUMMARY:Gershom Gorenberg: Distinguished Alumni Lecture
DESCRIPTION:Gershom Gorenberg\nUCSC alumnus Gershom Gorenberg is the author of the forthcoming book\, The Unmaking of Israel\, on the crisis of Israeli democracy and how to solve it. The book will be published in November by HarperCollins and is now available for pre-order at all the usual places. \nGershom’s previous book is The Accidental Empire: Israel and the Birth of the Settlements\, 1967-1977 (Times Books). Based on previously unpublished documents and extensive interviews\, The Accidental Empire presents a strikingly new picture of Israel’s post-1967 history\, of major Israeli leaders\, and of Israel-U.S. relations. \nHe is also the author of The End of Days: Fundamentalism and the Struggle for the Temple Mount\, which portrays the role of religious radicalism in the Mideast conflict. He co-authored The Jerusalem Report’s 1996 biography of Yitzhak Rabin\, Shalom Friend\, winner of the National Jewish Book Award\, and edited Seventy Facets: A Commentary on the Torah from the Pages from the Jerusalem Report. \nAs a commentator on Middle East affairs and the interface of religion and politics\, Gershom has appeared on Sixty Minutes\, Nightline\, Dateline\, Fresh Air and on CNN and BBC. For many years an associate editor of The Jerusalem Report\, he is now a senior correspondent for The American Prospect. He has written for The Atlantic Monthly\, The New York Times Magazine\, The New Republic\, Mother Jones and in Hebrew for Ha’aretz. \nGershom has been a visiting professor at Columbia Graduate School of Journalism\, and has lectured at the Council on Foreign Relations\, the Carnegie Council\, the Washington Institute for Near East Policy\, the Middle East Institute\, the Wexner Graduate Fellowship\, and for universities\, congregations and other organizations seeking a nuanced view of politics\, Mideast affairs and religion. \nGershom was born in St. Louis and grew up in California. After graduating from the University of California at Santa Cruz\, he came to Israel in 1977 and earned an MA in education at the Hebrew University. He lives in Jerusalem with his wife\, journalist Myra Noveck\, and their three children\, Yehonatan\, Yasmin and Shir-Raz. He is an active member of Kehillat Yedidya\, the pioneering progressive Orthodox congregation in South Jerusalem.
