SUMMARY:Santa Cruz Shakespeare Opening Night
DESCRIPTION:Tickets are now on sale for Santa Cruz Shakespeare’s 2024 Season\, featuring As You Like It\, Hamlet\, The Importance of Being Earnest\, and The Glass Menagerie. This is the Season of Generations: of the inheritors of the new world; of the young finding\, discovering\, claiming their identities and their power; of forging a new path and changing the world. Each of the shows of the 2024 season deal directly with the next generation inheriting the world. Co-sponsored by the Humanities Institute. \nThe 2024 season runs from July 18 – September 28. \n \n  \nAs You Like It by William Shakespeare | July 13 – Sept. 1 | Directed by Carey Perloff \nShakespeare’s As You Like It is a tale of banishment and escape to the forest of Arden\, where a merry band find unity\, love\, and rebirth. The ensemble includes the melancholy Jacques (“All the world’s a stage…)\, the vigorous Orlando\, and the brilliant Rosalind. Amidst a hurly of comedy\, disguise\, and discovery\, love is sought\, debated\, and eventually learned. As You Like It is a hilarious journey into the heart of human foible and frailty\, showing us the myriad ways that love can rebuild the world. \nHamlet by William Shakespeare | July 31 – Aug. 31 | Directed by Susan Dalian \nIn the most famous play ever written\, Prince Hamlet contends with the ghost of his father\, with the swift marriage of his mother to his uncle\, with himself… most potently with himself. His questions throughout\, of what it means to be a man\, a son\, a citizen of the world; what it means to be alive; what is owed; these questions have echoed through the last four hundred years and will no doubt echo for as long as we stand up on a stage and tell stories. Not to mention that it’s a thrilling tale of murder\, revenge\, madness\, and betrayal. Artistic Director\, Charles Pasternak\, will play Hamlet\, with former Artistic Director\, Mike Ryan\, as Claudius. \nThe Importance of Being Earnest by Oscar Wilde | July 14 – Sept. 7 | Directed by Paul Mullins \nOscar Wilde’s The Importance of Being Earnest has not been done in the 42-year history of Santa Cruz Shakespeare. It is one of the greatest comedies ever written\, filled with some of the sharpest wit in the English language. The most iconic figure of this masterpiece is the formidable Lady Bracknell; obsessed with tradition and propriety\, she cannot countenance her daughter Gwendolyn’s love of our titular Earnest. It’s not his money she objects to\, of which he has plenty\, but his bloodline: he has seemingly\, and famously\, descended from a HANDBAG. At least\, that’s where he was discovered as an orphan. The young strain and contrive against their elder’s conservatism; through fantasy\, imagination\, and so much wit\, they will reshape the world; redefining\, and reNAMING\, love’s conventions. \nThe Glass Menagerie by Tennessee Williams | Sept. 11‒28 | Directed by Charles Pasternak \nPresented for the first time in the company’s history\, Tennessee Williams’ The Glass Menagerie is an American masterpiece; an autobiographical “dream” play\, Tom\, the young Tennessee\, struggles in his claustrophobic home life\, caught between his controlling mother and his damaged sister. He loves them. His battle is actually not that he wants to leave\, but that he wants to stay. But if he does\, can he ever become the writer and the man he aspires to be? A thrilling expansion for Santa Cruz Shakespeare: Menagerie will open at the end of our traditional summer season\, running in the Grove through September.

SUMMARY:Santa Cruz Shakespeare 2023 Season Opening Night
DESCRIPTION:Tickets are now on sale for Santa Cruz Shakespeare’s 2023 season\, featuring The Book of Will and The Taming of the Shrew. Co-sponsored by the Humanities Institute. The season runs from July 13-August 27. \n \nThe Book of Will\, by Lauren Gunderson – Directed by Laura Gordon \nA love letter to William Shakespeare\, this moving and joyful comedy tells the story of the two actors\, friends of Shakespeare’s\, who worked to preserve his plays and legacy seven years after his death. This beat-the-clock race to collect all of Shakespeare’s plays into one book delights audiences with a tale full of color characters\, and provides a glimpse into a little known story about how his work survives and thrives to this day. SCS’s production of The Book of Will is part of a year-long celebration honoring the 400th anniversary of the printing of the First Folio and stars out-going Artistic Director Mike Ryan\, and in-coming Artistic Director Charles Pasternak. \nThe Taming of the Shrew\, by William Shakespeare – Directed by Robynn Rodriguez \nOne of Shakespeare’s most raucous comedies\, in The Taming of the Shrew characters struggle against the roles they have been prescribed by gender\, class\, or age. While the results of these struggles provide some of the most hilarious moments in the canon\, they also leave us with unsettling questions about the human cost of maintaining the status quo. Thorny\, funny\, and deeply human\, Kate and Petruchio are two of Shakespeare’s most fascinating characters. Out of place because of their honesty in a world of deception\, can these two broken people find happiness where they least expect it? \n  \n

SUMMARY:Opening today: Santa Cruz Shakespeare 2021 Season
DESCRIPTION:We are thrilled to announce that Santa Cruz Shakespeare will be back to live\, in-person performances this Summer! Tickets are on sale now! Capacity will be limited\, and safety measures will be in place to ensure a fun time for everyone. \n \nPlays in the year’s season: \nRII:\nText by William Shakespeare\nConceived and Adapted by Jessica Kubzansky.\nJuly-August 2021\nLive at The Grove (Streaming Option Available)\nThe story that sets the Wars of the Roses in motion\, Jessica Kubzansky’s adaptation of Shakespeare’s Richard II tells the story of that king’s ill-fated reign using only three actors. What is our responsibility when a bad leader rightfully occupies the throne? This exploration of divine right\, capricious leadership\, and bloody insurrection is packed with contemporary political relevance. A critic’s choice pick when it premiered at the Boston Court theatre in Los Angeles\, Charles McNulty\, critic for the LA Times\, called the play a “feat of ingenious stagecraft.” \nThe Agitators:\nBy Mat Smart\nJuly-August 2021\nLive at The Grove (Streaming Option Available) \nThis play\, by Mat Smart\, tells the story of Fredrick Douglass and Susan B. Anthony. Over the forty-five volatile years that they knew one another\, they were friends\, allies\, and adversaries. Their hopes and dreams for equality brought them to common ground and political battlefields. As agitators\, they were not content to let either our nation or each other rest in complacency\, and their respective fights for racial justice and gender equity continue to this day. \nThe Humanities Institute is a proud sponsor of the 2021 Santa Cruz Shakespeare Season.
