SUMMARY:Oceans of Dissent Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Oceans of Dissent will serve as a feminist gathering to forge new vernaculars of the geopolitical\, to assemble spatial imaginaries of the “oceanic” that refuse rather than relent to the insistent march of capital and empire. Our deliberations will foreground inter-linked landscapes across multiple oceanic field-formations\, to expand settled narratives of region\, historiography\, aesthetics and more. To “dissent” here is an invitation to think more about the messiness and stuckness of our intellectual labors across histories of slavery\, indenture\, colonialism and more. DESCRIPTION:To accomodate the planned strike action at UC Santa Cruz on November 18th\, this event will take place at the base of campus near the intersection of Bay and High Streets. \nPlease join the More-than-Human(ities) Laboratory as we co-host Dr. Lyla June Johnston and her timely talk on indigenous knowledge and agricultural practices. \nDr. Lyla June Johnston is an Indigenous musician\, scholar\, and community organizer of Diné (Navajo)\, Tsétsêhéstâhese (Cheyenne) and European lineages. Her messages focus on Indigenous rights\, supporting youth\, traditional land stewardship practices and healing inter-generational and inter-cultural trauma. She blends her study of Human Ecology at Stanford\, graduate work in Indigenous Pedagogy\, and the traditional worldview she grew up with to inform her music\, perspectives and solutions. Her doctoral research focused on the ways in which pre-colonial Indigenous Nations shaped large regions of Turtle Island (aka the Americas) to produce abundant food systems for humans and non-humans.

SUMMARY:Dickens Universe - The Old Curiosity Shop
DESCRIPTION:The Dickens Universe is a unique cultural event that brings together scholars\, teachers\, students\, and members of the general public for a week of stimulating discussion and festive social activity on the beautiful Santa Cruz campus of the University of California—all focused on one or two Victorian novels\, usually (but not always) one by Charles Dickens. \nIn 2025\, the Dickens Universe will feature The Old Curiosity Shop by Charles Dickens. Most people remember the novel for its famous and climactic death scene\, featuring one of Dickens’s most beloved (and reviled) girl heroines\, Little Nell. It is a novel full of interesting scenes\, themes\, and curiosities. Featuring a gallery of Dickens’s most grotesque characters\, it explores the idea of deformity\, especially as it contrasts with the angelic innocence and strangely embodied beauty of Little Nell. Its picaresque roots make it an adventure story as well as an allegory of moral journey; its interest in the urban landscape\, its pleasure and dangers\, suggest Dickens’s social concerns. \nNow in its 45th year of operation\, the Dickens Universe combines features of a scholarly conference\, a festival\, a book club\, and a summer camp. Participants include people of all ages and walks of life—distinguished scholars\, graduate students\, undergraduates\, retirees\, young professionals\, high school teachers\, anyone who loves to read and who enjoys long Victorian novels. \nHere are some of the reasons why the Universe such a special experience: \n\nThe college lifestyle: participants live on campus\, eat together in the student dining hall\, have time to meet and come to know each other in different ways.\nEveryone is reading the same book. DESCRIPTION:While the originally planned program focusing on David Copperfield and Iola Leroy will still take place in 2021\, this week of online programming will feature a range of conversations that discuss the occasion of the pair and the insights that bringing them together can offer. Over the week\, scholars from Victorian studies and early African American studies will discuss linkages between their fields\, approaches for addressing race and racism in the classroom\, and productive ways to engage with Black studies in the nineteenth century and its transatlantic contexts. We hope that this will generate excitement to read these two novels over the next year and to join us in Santa Cruz for the full Dickens Universe conference. \n \nWe hope that this week will provide some useful context for these two novels\, as we read them together over the next year. In addition to providing some critical background for France E. W. Harper’s career and Iola Leroy\, it will also help place her alongside Dickens as one of the most important and prolific writers of the nineteenth century. Like Dickens\, Harper was a virtuoso writer of many literary genres (including fiction\, prose\, and poetry)\, was deeply involved in nineteenth-century print and periodical cultures. She was a powerful public speaker and an activist in the anti-slavery\, suffrage\, temperance\, and post-emancipation racial justice movements. \nQuestions? Celebrate and explore the enduring legacy of the world’s first science-fiction horror story with FRANKENCON\, a three-day conference of scientists\, theorists\, and artists on November 21-23\, 2019 at UC Santa Cruz. \nThe conference is in conjunction with the Theater Arts Department production of The Frankenstein Project\, a play by Kirsten Brandt. \nIn the centuries since Mary Shelley first penned the novel\, the lore and magic of Frankenstein has molded the modern genre of science fiction. How might their distinctive practical techniques and theoretical concerns enrich and transform each other? Acting with Shakespeare is an interactive workshop that explores how actors move from the page to the stage; how verse\, rhetoric and complex imagery are made more intelligible to the ear; and how to pull useful clues from Shakespeare’s text that translate the spoken word into action.
