SUMMARY:Intimacies of Relation: The Autotheoretical Turn
DESCRIPTION:Autotheory’s genre-bending form blends critical theory with life writing. Through performances\, readings\, papers\, and embodied writing exercises\, this transdisciplinary conference explores where and how autotheory emerged\, the range of its practices\, and the ways in which its forms recast the relationships between subjects and the worlds that make them. Panels explore autotheory in relationship to language\, image\, film\, visual\, and performance art; the autotheoretical subject in dialogue with the psychoanalytic subject and its scenes of desire; autotheory’s encounter with racialized\, trans\, queer\, and differently abled bodies\, and autotheoretical practices of decolonial love. \nThis conference will take place from March 6–8\, 2025\, at the Institute of the Arts and Sciences (March 6\, 2–7 pm) and Humanities 1\, Room 210 (March 7 & 8). \nSee the full program here. \n \nFeaturing: Kazim Ali\, Alex Brostoff\, La Marr Jurelle Bruce\, Vilashini Cooppan\, Iliana Cuellar\, Nadia Ellis\, Carla Freccero\, rl Goldberg\, Che Gossett\, Jan Grue\, Eva Hayward\, Grace Lavery\, Summer Kim Lee\, Megan Moodie\, Micah Perks\, Elda María Román\, Simone Stirner\, Susan Stryker\, Kim TallBear\, Ronaldo V. Wilson\, Arianne Zwartjes \n\nSponsored by: The University of California Humanities Research Institute\, The Seminar in Experimental Critical Theory at UCHRI\, The Humanities Institute at UCSC\, and The Center for Cultural Studies at UCSC. \nImage credit: Ronaldo V. SUMMARY:Dickens Universe: A Tale of Two Cities
DESCRIPTION:The Dickens Universe is a unique cultural event that brings together scholars\, teachers\, students\, and members of the general public for a week of stimulating discussion and festive social activity on the beautiful Santa Cruz campus of the University of California—all focused on one or two Victorian novels\, usually (but not always) one by Charles Dickens. \nIn 2023\, the Dickens Universe will feature A Tale of Two Cities by Charles Dickens. A historical novel set in London and Paris at the time of the French Revolution\, its plot involves many sensational and melodramatic elements: imprisonment in the Bastille and the bloody Reign of Terror; lost children and body doubles; heroism and sacrifice. \nYet contained within this plot are resonances that pull readers beyond England and France\, and beyond the temporal frames of one\, albeit momentous\, historical conflict. Comparison and doubling abound\, as the title’s two (European) cities multiply outward\, toward Bombay (now Mumbai)\, Santo Domingo (Dominican Republic)\, Victoria (Australia)\, Santiago (Chile). Likewise\, the revolution in question is not limited to the Napoleonic Wars\, but manifold\, involving civil unrest and violent uprisings both domestic (the Chartist movement) and abroad\, from Jamaica to the US\, South Asia\, the Antipodes\, and beyond (as in the 1946 propaganda film A Tale of Two Cities about the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki). \nNow in its 42nd year of operation\, the Dickens Universe combines features of a scholarly conference\, a festival\, a book club\, and summer camp. Participants include people of all ages and walks of life—distinguished scholars\, graduate students\, undergraduates\, retirees\, young professionals\, high school teachers\, anyone who loves to read and who enjoys long Victorian novels. \n \nHere are some of the things that make the Universe such a special experience. \n\nThe college lifestyle: participants live on campus\, eat together in the student dining hall\, have time to meet and come to know each other in different ways.\nEveryone is reading the same book. We all have this one important thing in common.\nThe range of activities—formal lectures\, small discussion groups\, films\, daily Victorian teas\, performances\, and Victorian dancing.\nThe Universe offers a week of total immersion in the world of Victorian fiction with friendly\, like-minded colleagues in a beautiful setting. Whether we’re returning to a Dickens novel that everyone knows and loves\, or branching out into a Victorian novel by another author who might be less familiar\, during the Universe we build a community out of our passion for reading\, talking with one another\, and bringing Victorian culture to life.\n\nThe Universe offers a week of total immersion in the world of Victorian fiction with friendly\, like-minded colleagues in a beautiful setting. Its research activities have been supported by extramural grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities\, the U.S. Department of Education\, the California Council for the Humanities\, the California Arts Council\, the Exxon Education Foundation\, dues from member schools\, and private gifts. SUMMARY:Dickens Universe: Iola + David
\nIn 2022\, the Dickens Universe will pair one of the best-known novels of Dickens\, David Copperfield\, with the most famous of all nineteenth-century African-American novels\, Frances E. W. Harper’s Iola Leroy or\, Shadows Uplifted. Reflections on how personal histories of coming of age play out through and against the mysteries and brutalities of history; confrontations with the claims of familial and community loyalties\, as these come to be fractured\, exposed\, and reconfigured: through these and other ways of reading\, Universe participants will explore what happens when the novels of these two extraordinary novelists\, reformers\, orators\, poets\, and journalists are brought into conversation. \nNow in its 41st year of operation\, the Dickens Universe combines features of a scholarly conference\, a festival\, a book club\, and summer camp. Participants include people of all ages and walks of life—distinguished scholars\, graduate students\, undergraduates\, retirees\, young professionals\, high school teachers\, anyone who loves to read and who enjoys long Victorian novels. \nHere are some of the things that make the Universe such a special experience. \n\nThe college lifestyle: participants live on campus\, eat together in the student dining hall\, have time to meet and come to know each other in different ways.\nEveryone is reading the same book. SUMMARY:Giving Day
DESCRIPTION:Be a Part of Giving Day at UC Santa Cruz \nGiving Day is an energized 24-hour online fundraising drive to support UC Santa Cruz students\, faculty\, and campus programs. It’s a day for people everywhere to come together in a circle of giving for UC Santa Cruz. Generous donors provide incentives to make the day a success. They create matching funds that increase the impact of gifts to individual projects and they support challenge funds that inspire friendly competition among project teams. Givingday.ucsc.edu \nHumanities participants are: The Center for Public Philosophy\, The Classics Program\, Critical Race and Ethnic Studies (CRES)\, The Dickens Project\, and The Gail Project. \nOur Classics Program will be competing for a prize of $500-$1000 for the 7-8 am “Challenge Hour”. The goal is to have the most donors during that time window\, so if you plan to give to the Carl Deppe Memorial Lecture in Classics\, that will be a great time to do so! \nWe would appreciate your participation in whatever way suits you: whether it is by spreading the word through social media or by donating. The minimum donation this year is $5\, and every bit helps. \nIf you have questions\, or are interested in providing a matching gift\, please contact Jenna Hurley at jehurley@ucsc.edu.
