THI Partnership with National Humanities Center Supports UCSC Scholars

A five-year collaboration between The Humanities Institute and the National Humanities Center has supported dozens of UCSC students, faculty, and scholars to receive further training in humanities pedagogy, digital technologies, and public-facing scholarship.

The Humanities Institute is proud to continue our partnership with the National Humanities Center to support members of the UC Santa Cruz community to attend NHC programming throughout the academic year. In 2023-2024, we funded five fellows to attend NHC’s Winter Program, “Podcasting for Humanities Graduate Students: Storytelling for a Modern Audience.” In this five-day virtual institute, fellows gained hands-on, immersive training to translate their research and community-engaged narratives into podcast episodes. Participants worked in cross-disciplinary and intra-university collaborative teams while learning about storyboarding and collecting and editing audio content.

2023-2024 THI NHC Podcasting Fellow and PhD History of Consciousness student Stefania Cotei shares that the program “completely revolutionized my thinking about how I can make my research more publicly accessible.” For Cotei, a highlight of the experience was “getting to meet and work with a diverse group of students from all over the world who are also curious about how to be better at engaging the public with their work.”

THI is also excited to name Andrew Allio, PhD candidate in History, as the 2024 THI NHC Summer Fellow. Allio will attend NHC’s Summer Program, “Becoming a Modern Scholar.” This in-person residency will model best practices for undergraduate teaching in the humanities classroom. We are excited to see NHC’s programming resume its in-person training in Research Triangle Park, North Carolina.

As part of their fellowships, THI NHC Fellows are also provided opportunities to share their insights and experiences from these trainings with the UC Santa Cruz campus community through participation in PhD+ events, departmental trainings, and pedagogical collaborations. For example, the 2020 THI NHC Fellows led a PhD+ workshop called “Impassioned Online Teaching: Empathy, Embodiment and Radical Pedagogy in Practice” to share methods for creating virtual experiences for students that are inclusive, accessible, engaging, and impactful.

Our partnership with the National Humanities Center is one way we offer skills training, professional development, and networking opportunities for UC Santa Cruz scholars from across campus who are engaged in humanities work.
