In response to possible cuts to the National Endowment for the Humanities, advocates sent more than 5,500 emails urging Members of Congress to support the NEH and oppose any amendments to further reduce funding to the agency. HR1, passed on February 19th, provided NEH with $145 million for FY 2011.

The Institute for Humanities Research (IHR) is pleased to announce a call for 2010-2011 Research Clusters. This program, funded by the UC Humanities Initiative, is designed to encourage and support research in any area of the Humanities. In addition to programming, we encourage the clusters to view this as seed funding and to think about ways the cluster can serve as an incubator for larger projects in the future, and how they can leverage cluster funds to secure extramural funding.

The selection committee for the 2010-2011 UC President’s Faculty Research Fellowships in the Humanities met on Saturday and made their choices. The winners will receive formal award letters that instruct them to work with their deans in developing their funding packages and to work with their local campus humanities centers as part of our new UC Society of Fellows in the Humanities.

The UC Institute for Research in the Arts (UCIRA) recently announced the launch of three new areas of interest: Social Ecologies: California-centric embedded arts research; Social Technologies: New models of value exchange; and Integrative Methodologies: Re-negotiating the art/science paradigm. UCIRA has a small amount of funding available to individuals/groups wishing to convene to explore the possibility for new collaborative area(s) of research and/or project development in relationship to one of these three areas.

Despite the bleak budget situation, there is good news for faculty, students, staff and all those engaged in and by humanities research in the University of California. Last spring, after a comprehensive review of 139 proposals from existing and proposed multi-campus research units, programs, and initiatives, the UC Office of Research awarded major funding over five years to the University of California Humanities Network.
Applications are now being taken for the 2010 Mediterranean Studies NEH Summer Institute, to be held in Barcelona, Spain. This is the second four-week Summer Institute for University and College Professors organized by The Mediterranean Seminar.
