Frequently Asked Questions
Should my application be single or double spaced?
We don’t have a rule, but generally receive materials that are single-spaced in order to have enough room to include relevant information within the page limits.
For fellowships like the THI Summer Dissertation Fellowship and Hayden V. White Summer Dissertation Fellowship where the eligibility requirement is that students must be a “PhD candidate” can I only apply if I’m already advanced to candidacy at the time of application or is it sufficient if I will advance before the research starts in the summer? What if I have just finished my qualifying exams but am still in the process of compiling a dissertation prospectus, so technically not yet a candidate?
We are only able to accept applications from students who have already advanced to candidacy by the end of Winter quarter for the fellowships for PhD candidates. Unfortunately, we cannot consider your application if you have plans to advance Spring quarter but have not yet completed the requirements. Please note that we have a variety of fellowships, many of which support PhD students at earlier stages of their research.
Can I apply to fellowships that are only open to Humanities PhD students if I am in a PhD program in another Division but I have a designated emphasis in the Humanities?
No, due to the source of funding these fellowships are only open to students in PhD programs in the Humanities Division.
There was x situation and my letter of recommendation or other applications materials will arrive late. Will you please make an exception?
We are not able to accept late materials.
Is it possible to meet with someone at THI one-on-one to discuss my application materials?
At this time, we don’t have staff capacity to meet individually about applications. You are encouraged to attend our PhD+ workshop on grants and fellowships on February 25th at 11:30am to learn more about how to put together a competitive application and hear directly from THI’s Faculty Director. If you are a Humanities PhD student you can also receive feedback on your materials from the Committee on Graduate Student Grant Writing (please note that this process takes up to 10 days).
