Poet and writing professor Dorianne Laux is the guest of honor at the eighth annual Morton Marcus Poetry Reading at UC Santa Cruz on Thursday, Nov. 16.

Laux teaches poetry in the creative writing program at North Carolina State University in Raleigh, where she lives with her husband Joseph Millar, also a celebrated poet. She has won the Pushcart Prize, a Guggenheim fellowship, two fellowships from the National Endowment of the Arts and the Paterson Prize for her 2011 collection “The Book of Men: Poems.”

The Marcus Poetry reading is hosted by poet and publisher Gary Young, and honors the late poet and critic Morton Marcus, who was at the center for Santa Cruz’s literary life for four decades. The evening will include the announcement of the winner of the Morton Marcus Poetry Contest.

The event featuring Dorianne Laux is free and takes place Thursday, Nov. 16 at 5:30 p.m. at the Humanities Lecture Hall 206, Cowell College at UCSC. Parking is $4. Details: ihr.ucsc.edu.
