Call for Proposals

The Humanities Institute Faculty Research and Publication Grant is a new fund that directly supports Humanities faculty in two categories:

    1. Individual Research:  Awards are available to support individual Humanities faculty research. Examples of eligible expenses include graduate or undergraduate student research assistance, travel expenses, research materials (including books), research equipment, research-related costs, or seed funding. Note that regular office supplies, including laptops or other equipment met by faculty’s standard computer package, are not considered eligible expenses. 
    2. Publication Assistance: Awards are available to support publication costs, subventions, and manuscript workshops.

Amounts: 
Individual Research: $250-$2,500
Publication Assistance: up to $5,000
Funds will be transferred to a faculty member’s individual research account.

Eligibility: 
Applicants must be faculty in the Humanities Division and members of the UCSC Senate. In order to be considered for this award, applicants must have applied for a UC Santa Cruz Committee on Research (COR) grant for the same project in the same academic year. 

Award Duration:
Funding is awarded for Academic Year 2022-23. Any unspent money on June 30, 2023, will be returned to The Humanities Institute. 

Reporting Requirement:
The Humanities Institute expects a final, 1-page report on July 1, 2023. This report should detail a) the research activities, b) how the award enhanced your scholarship, and c) whether you applied for extramural funds. Any presentations or publications that result in whole or in part from work done during this fellowship period should acknowledge The Humanities Institute at the University of California, Santa Cruz.

Application Guidelines:
A complete application must include the following:

    1. Project Description (2-3 pages, double spaced) that does the following:
      • States the aims, ideas, and methodology of the project.
      • Discusses the project’s significance and original contributions in the context of current humanities scholarship.
      • Specifies the scope of the project.
      • Includes a detailed timetable and work plan, specifying project activities in the proposed award period.
      • Defines the project’s target audience(s) and the final form(s) the research will take (e.g. a book, article, exhibit, panel, event, performance, etc.).
