Graduate Student Public Fellows to Work as Fellows at the Museum of Art & History, National Park Service, GLBT Historical Society, Lux Magazine, and Tamarack Free Library
Five Humanities graduate students will bring their scholarship and academic expertise to communities and develop new skills outside of a university setting as the Summer 2023 cohort of THI Public Fellows. Public Fellows contribute to research, programming, communications and fundraising at companies, non-profit organizations, and cultural institutions and gain valuable experience applying their skills and expertise outside the academy.
Tumacácori National Historic Site
The organizations gaining that additional support in 2023 are the following: Tumacácori, a National Historic Site in southern Arizona; the Santa Cruz Museum of Art and History; the Tamarack Free Library, based in Oakland; the Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender (GLBT) Historical Society in San Francisco; and Lux Magazine, a social, feminist magazine.
The new fellows will support work in community arts engagement, queer histories, expanding access to literary material and resources, and curriculum development. Graduate students will gain experience in a variety of settings, including libraries, archives, and historic sites, while gaining skills in editorial work, curation, and more. The Public Fellows program provides an invaluable link between graduate students and community organizations, helping fellows gain professional experience in a variety of non-academic settings. The students and the organizations they work with reflect the diversity of UC Santa Cruz graduate student research in the Humanities and the important connection between academic skills and public initiatives that benefit local communities.
