This fellowship is sponsored by The Humanities Institute and Shakespeare Workshop at UC Santa Cruz. Shakespeare Workshop is a collaboration of faculty, students, and artists at UC Santa Cruz who are devoted to the study of Shakespeare’s works and to the mission of public higher education.
The Humanities Institute is a hub for new directions in research and teaching, cross-discipline collaboration, and public engagement. C. L. BARBER FELLOW SUMMER 2022

The C.L. Barber Fellowship provides for one masters or doctoral student in Literature to work as an assistant dramaturg in the 2022 summer season at Santa Cruz Shakespeare, under the direction of the Artistic Director and Head Dramaturg there.
C.L. Barber Fellows are members of the Public Fellows cohort of The Humanities Institute. Public fellowships provide the opportunity for humanities graduate students to apply and expand their skills in a non-academic setting while engaged in graduate study.
Please consider the following questions when writing your application: (1) How would your experience with Shakespeare, whatever it may be, contribute to the success of the summer season? (2) How does working as a dramaturg at Santa Cruz Shakespeare fit into your career trajectory or your goals for exploring career options? (3) How would your work at Santa Cruz Shakespeare enrich your teaching and research as a Literature graduate student?
The C.L. Barber Fellow will receive:
- A fellowship stipend of $5,000 paid either in Spring or Summer 2022
- Mentoring from Shakespeare Workshop, The Humanities Institute, and Santa Cruz Shakespeare
Eligibility:
Applicants must be:
- Enrolled in the doctoral or masters program in Literature at UC Santa Cruz
- In good academic standing (and, for doctoral students, within normative time)
- Enrolled in at least five credits of graduate-level coursework (students are ineligible to apply while on leave)
Applications should include:
1) A Cover Letter (1-2 pages) outlining your interest in this position and your qualifications, including your interest in or experience with Shakespeare
2) A CV or Resume (1-2 pages)
3) A signed form from the department Graduate Director stating that you are in good academic standing and, if a doctoral student, within normative time, during the 2021-2022 Academic Year. (Download Form here.)
Timeline:
After an initial screening by The Humanities Institute, applications will be forwarded to Santa Cruz Shakespeare, which will organize interviews. The final decision about applications will be made jointly by The Humanities Institute and Santa Cruz Shakespeare.
