CFA: Center for the Middle East and North Africa Arabic Language Study Graduate Fellowships 2025

Application Deadline: May 1st, 2025

Amount: $3,000

The Center for the Middle East and North Africa (CMENA) welcomes applications from graduate students from any division at UC Santa Cruz to support the study of Arabic during the Summer of 2025 in the amount of $3,000. Three awards are available.

Applicants will be selected based on the demonstrated benefits that language study will offer to their proposed research. CMENA strongly recommends that the grant be used to enroll at the Bourguiba language school in Tunis (where CMENA can help facilitate lodging). Graduate students at all stages (MA, PhD) are welcome to apply. Before receiving the funds, awardees will be required to demonstrate enrollment at a recognized center for language study. Moreover, they will be asked to provide proof of completion on their return.

Eligibility: The student must be:

  • Enrolled in an MA or PhD program at UC Santa Cruz (any division is eligible)
  • Working on a project that would benefit from Arabic language study
  • Be within normative time and in good academic standing
  • Enrolled in at least five credits of graduate-level coursework. Students are ineligible to apply while on leave.

Application consists of:

1)  Letter of application (one to two pages), which includes the following: a) an indication of your current level of Arabic and your past experience of study; b) a short description of your research project (1 paragraph); c) an explanation of how the intensive study of Arabic will help advance your research, including a description of what sources or fieldwork it will help you to study; d) an indication of where you plan to study Arabic, whether you will focus on Modern Standard or spoken dialect, and why you have chosen your location (especially if you are requesting the money to travel to a location other than Tunis)

2)  Curriculum vitae, which includes a list of previous and current awards and grants (award and grant titles, dates, and amounts)

3)  Signed form from your department’s Graduate Director stating that you will be within normative time and in good academic standing during the 2024-2025 Academic Year: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1D6ghwdBeHm1w8Z5Dr0PyekxmtKw6C4s3/view
