The National Humanities Center 2022 Summer Program

We are accepting applications for the National Humanities Center 2022 Graduate Student Summer Program on “Meaningful Teaching and Learning in the Humanities Classroom.” This year’s 5-day virtual residency will focus on best practices for undergraduate teaching in the digital world, specifically on effective instructional strategies that can be modified for an in-person, virtual, or hybrid classroom. Graduate student cohorts will interact and learn from university professionals, and participants will also have opportunities to work with each other through interactive sessions and projects. The program will not simply be a series of Zoom meetings, although there will be live events scheduled. Instead, it will be an opportunity to construct an online learning environment that features design principles students can directly apply to their teaching experiences specifically for the humanities classroom. Topics will include:  Open Education Resources (OER), Online Course Design and Instruction, How to Build Community and Relationships, Interactive Teaching Technologies, Student Assessments, and Class Evaluations. 

Dates: July 11-15, 2022

Award: The National Humanities Center has designated spots in this program for UC Santa Cruz Humanities PhD students. The fellowship, funded by The Humanities Institute, will cover the $750 tuition cost per participant.

Eligibility: The applicant must be:

  1. A PhD student in a graduate program in the Humanities Division or engaged in humanities research and teaching in Visual Studies, Film and Digital Media, Music, Latin American and Latino Studies, Sociology, or Anthropology.
  2. Within normative time and in good academic standing
  3. Enrolled in at least five credits of graduate-level coursework. Students are ineligible to apply while on leave.
  4. Available to participate in a THI PhD+ event sharing your experience with graduate student colleagues in the following academic year.

Applications should include the following components:

A. A complete application, including short answers to the following questions on the online application form:

  1. One of the goals of the NHC Summer Program is to support humanities PhD students to create meaningful learning experiences. What has come up for you in your teaching that makes you interested in this program?
  2. Participants in the residency will be asked to participate in a THI PhD+ event to share some of your learning from this experience with your humanities graduate student colleagues. Please discuss your interest in supporting a community-centered event on effective and meaningful teaching amongst your peers. How can you envision bringing what you learn in the program back to your humanities graduate student colleagues at UCSC?
  3. How do you understand the NHC Summer Program fitting in with your current and post-graduation goals, including contributing to humanities scholarship and teaching more broadly?
  4. Have you participated in other professional development opportunities for teaching at UCSC (such as programs/workshops through the Center for Innovations in Teaching and Learning) or at another institution? If so, please explain.
