Share

Deadline: May 15, 2026
Amount: Up to $1500

The Humanities Institute is pleased to announce a call for Faculty Research Grants in order to provide direct support for Humanities faculty research projects during the 2026 calendar year.

Examples of eligible expenses include, but are not limited to: travel expenses; publication costs; student research assistants (please specify how this supports the faculty member’s research project); research materials (including books); and other research-related costs or seed funding. Funds may also be used to support manuscript workshops organized by the faculty member (note that the grant does not include staff support).

Ineligible expenses: Research equipment and standard office supplies (including laptops or items typically covered by a faculty computer package) are not eligible. This grant does not support conference expenses. Funding may not be used for student support on projects that are separate from the faculty member’s research.

Eligibility: Applicants must be faculty in the Humanities Division and members of the UCSC Senate. In order to be considered for this award, applicants must apply for a UC Santa Cruz Committee on Research (COR) grant for the same project in the same academic year.

Selection Criteria: Selection will be based on evaluation of the nature and impact of the proposed project, the importance of conducting the work in 2026, and the funding sources the applicant has for the project.

Award Duration: Funds will be available by early June and must be used by December 31, 2026

Reporting Requirement: The Humanities Institute expects a final, 1-page report by January 31, 2027. This report should detail a) the research activities, b) how the award enhanced your scholarship, and c) whether you applied for extramural funds. Any presentations or publications that result in whole or in part from work done during this fellowship period should acknowledge The Humanities Institute at the University of California, Santa Cruz.

Application Guidelines:

A complete application must include the following:

  1. One page project description that does the following:
    1. Discusses the project’s aims, significance, and original contributions in the context of current humanities scholarship.
    2. Specifies the scope of the project and project activities during the grant period.
    3. Defines the project’s target audience(s) and the final form(s) the research will take (e.g. a book, article, exhibit, panel, event, performance, etc.).
  2. One page budget with budget justification (narrative describing how budget line items will support the project activities).
  3. CV
