Delio Vasquez (New York University) will be in conversation with Darien Acero & xafsa ciise (UC Santa Cruz). This conversation and talk describes Huey P. Newton’s conception of reality and how it informed his development of strategies for the revolutionary organization, the Black Panther Party. Newton’s early approach was deeply influenced by skepticism, radical empiricism, existentialism, and the disorientation created by the lived experiences of Blackness and carceral solitary confinement. In time he developed an analysis of the experience of oppression as a phenomenal flux that could be channeled into mutual aid and communal defense of liberated territories against capitalist abandonment, genocide, and a society of technological control. Huey P. Newton: I am We is a new intellectual history that draws upon Newton’s many unpublished writings to establish him as a philosopher, while also providing a critical analysis of his late decline. Newton’s body of work included writings on ecology, feminist thought, political economy, ancient philosophy, theology, and the sciences. The event is co-sponsored with The Humanities Institute
