South Asia by the Bay
About the Project
South Asia by the Bay is interested in exploring new, critical links between two seemingly segregated field-formations: area studies and feminist studies. With an emphasis on work that uses feminist analytics to reconfigure scholarly and geo-political formations of South Asia we are attempting to create a much-needed space for young scholars working on issues of gender within and connected to South Asia. Eschewing the conventional segregation and/or minoritization of regions as spatialities that provide local historical flavor, the group seeks to simultaneously correct regional asymmetries of the past of slavery, as well as highlight the centrality of gender in the making and conceiving of ‘region’ itself.
