Announcing THI’s 2022-2023 Undergraduate Public Fellows

Share

In 2022-2023, THI is proud to be supporting our largest cohort of Undergraduate Public Fellows yet. Thirteen undergraduate students are partnering with seven different organizations to connect their academic studies with public humanities projects. THI’s Public Fellows program offers a mutually enriching opportunity for students to bring the humanities skills they have acquired in their university courses to diverse roles at non-profit organizations, museums, cultural institutions, and publishing venues.

In 2022-2023, students are working with Watsonville is in the Heart, Prison Journalism Project, Open Campus, Okinawa Memories InitiativeThe American Prospect, the Community Foundation Santa Cruz County, and the Santa Cruz Museum of Art & History.

Two students are gaining skills in editing and digital publishing at Prison Journalism Project, a nonprofit organization that works with incarcerated and incarceration-impacted writers to train them in journalism and help them reach a wide audience through publication. Public Fellow alumnus, Atlas Martinez, recently shared in a video about their experience working with Prison Journalism Project, “It was a really perfect fit for me to not only do something that has impacted my life so severely and make a difference in that, but also receive good career opportunities and job training.”

Four students are serving as Oral History Interns at Watsonville is in the Heart, a community-driven public history initiative to preserve and uplift stories of Filipinx migration and labor in the city of Watsonville and greater Pajaro Valley.

One student is working as an Editorial Assistant at Open Campus, a nonprofit news organization dedicated to investigating and elevating reporting on higher education across the country.

Two students are working with the Santa Cruz Museum of Art & History–one as a digital archivist and the other as an educational programmer.

One student is an Editorial Intern at The American Prospect, a magazine and website that is devoted to promoting informed discourse on public-policy matters from a progressive perspective through a narrative interpretation of complex issues.

Two students are continuing as Community Engagement Interns at the Community Foundation Santa Cruz County to support events, communications, and Rise Together, an intercultural coalition of local leaders working to advance racial equity.

One student is curating digital exhibits at the Okinawa Memories Initiative, a collaborative, international public history project that explores the founding years of the American military occupation of Okinawa.

We are eager for our 2022-2023 THI Undergraduate Public Fellows to develop professional skills while making connections and meaningful contributions to these organizations.

Our Undergraduate Public Fellowships are generously supported by the Helen and Will Webster Foundation. The THI Undergraduate Public Fellowship with The American Prospect is possible thanks to the generosity of Michael “Mike” Stern.

See the full list of Undergraduate Public Fellows below and check our website for student profiles in the months ahead. A list of all THI Fellows is available here.

Congratulations to our biggest cohort of THI Undergraduate Public Fellows yet!
