The Oaxacan Languages of the Transnational Central Coast project is holding a pop-up at October First Friday at the Santa Cruz Museum of Art and History (MAH). This pop-up presents a collage of the overlapping experiences of Indigenous and non-Indigenous Mexican immigrants who sustain their communities in the U.S. and Mexico through their work, language, and culture. Across a series of interviews, a group of local agricultural workers shared celebrations of resilience, aspirations for their families, and contemplations on the ways language and culture keep them connected to home. The project aims to give visibility to these laborers, while countering the flattened view of Mexican immigrants as a monolingual and monolithic group. The pop-up exhibition presents their voices and invites visitors to join the conversation through reflection activities and zine-making in collaboration with the MAH.
