Join us for a free, public film screening to kickoff Borders and Belonging: A Series of Events on Human Migration

To foster a conversation about migration, LALS and the CLRC are jointly hosting a special screening of Marcela Zamora’s María en tierra de nadie (María in No Man’s Land), 2010. This is the story of three Salvadoran women and their journey to the United States. The film has been called unprecedented and a critical addition to the global migration conversation. The journalists and filmographers involved in creating this unique documentary spent months riding the trains and sleeping in the same shelters as they followed immigrants from El Salvador and Mexico, attempting to make the harrowing crossing to the United States.

Immediately following the screening, Professors John J. Leaños (Film & Digital Media) and Cecilia Rivas (LALS) will moderate a Q&A with the director, Marcela Zamora.

Marcela Zamora is a documentary filmmaker and journalist. She has made 14 films about gender and human rights, including María en tierra de nadie and El cuarto de los huesos / The Room of Bones (2015), a documentary about the quest to unearth and identify the disappeared in El Salvador. She studied journalism in Costa Rica and documentary filmmaking in Cuba and has worked for Al Jazeera, Tele Sur, and Elfaro.net, Latin America’s first online newspaper.
