Against Orthodoxies: Working with Hayden White

On November 1 and 2, 2019
, a conference will be held at UC Santa Cruz to honor Hayden White who died a year ago.

The conference organizers, Paul Roth, Professor of Philosophy, and James Clifford, Professor Emeritus, History of Consciousness, conceive the event as an invitation to extend Hayden’s thinking in new directions. The intent is not to offer a retrospective assessment, but rather an opportunity to think with Hayden, not think about Hayden.

The organizing committee state: “we imagine an occasion for experiment and dialogue, for the emergence of fresh thinking.” Hayden’s “rigorous, daring, and iconoclastic spirit will, we hope, animate the proceedings.”

Confirmed participants are distinguished intellectuals from a wide variety of disciplines that Hayden influenced, and are all people who knew him well.

More specific information will be forthcoming later this Spring, but for now, please save the date.
