VIRTUAL Akemi Johnson – Night in the American Village: Women in the Shadow of the US Military Bases

Akemi Johnson is an author and journalist who’s work centers on Okinawan history and identity, she has contributed to NPR’s All Things Considered and Code Switch, and has written for The Guardian and The Nation. Now, Akemi Johnson joins us to discuss her 2019 book Night in the American Village: Women in the Shadow of the US Military Bases in Okinawa, which explores the nuanced relationship between Okinawan women and the servicemen who live on the U.S. military bases on the island.
