For decades, two official nationalist narratives, Arab-Egyptian & Israeli, dominated the discourse on the history of Egypt’s Jews. Recently, a different narrative is emerging in the Arabic speaking sphere, with documentaries, films & novels taking a cardinal role in this process. How and why is this emergence taking place?
Najat Abdulhaq is the author of Jewish and Greek Communities in Egypt: Entrepreneurship and Business Before Nasser (I. B. Tauris).
This week’s Cultural Studies colloquium is co-sponsored by the Jewish Studies Program.
The Center for Cultural Studies hosts a weekly Wednesday colloquium featuring work by faculty and visitors. The sessions consist of a 40-45 minute presentation followed by discussion. We gather at noon, with presentations beginning at 12:15 PM. Participants are encouraged to bring their own lunches; the Center provides coffee, tea, and cookies.
All Center for Cultural Studies events are free and open to the public. Staff assistance is provided by the Institute for Humanities Research.
