James Clifford is an interdisciplinary scholar who was a Professor in UCSC’s History of Consciousness department for 33 years until his retirement in 2011. He was elected to the American Academy of the Arts and Sciences in 2011. The History of Consciousness department at UCSC continues to be an intellectual center for innovative critical scholarship in the U.S. and abroad. Since 2000, Clifford’s writing has focused on processes of globalization and decolonization as they influence contemporary “indigenous” lives, including Returns: Becoming Indigenous in the Twenty First Century (2013).
